small businesses

For a lot of small businesses, word of mouth does most of the work. Customers who find the business tend to love it, but the people who'd be a good fit often don't know it exists, or can't tell it apart from similar options nearby and online. I help small businesses put into words what their regulars already know, and make sure new customers see it too. As a business owner myself, I know how little time is left over for thinking about brand positioning. Everything I develop is built for that—clear, useful, and something you can keep up without outside help.

how I help

You probably already know what makes your business special. It's in how your customers talk about it. Branding work puts that into words and gives it a look: a clear sense of what sets you apart, the language to describe it, and an identity that connects.

  • Customer and market research

  • Local landscape assessment

  • Brand strategy and positioning

  • Messaging

  • Logo and visual identity

  • Brand guidelines

The best information about a small business usually comes from the people who already choose it. I start there—with your customers, your team, and you—and use what I learn to shape everything else.

branding

Most small business owners don't have time to post, email, and update the website on a regular schedule, so what does go out needs to count. Communications work looks at what you're already doing, who you most need to reach, and what they care about, then focuses your time on the few things most likely to bring them in.

Design is how your business shows up before anyone walks in—your sign, your website, your menu or price list, your Instagram. It should all look like it comes from the same place, and be simple enough that you can update it yourself.

HoneyGirl Beauty has been a Mill Valley favorite for nearly a decade. It's a boutique waxing studio and clothing shop with a loyal following built almost entirely on word of mouth. It already had what most brands spend years chasing: real personality, real client relationships, and a space that feels nothing like a salon. What it didn't have was a brand that showed any of that to someone who hadn't been through the door. I led a full brand refresh, starting with research into HoneyGirl's clients and a competitive audit. The audit showed a market full of studios that were clinical, overly cheerful, or simply forgettable. That gap became the foundation for a new positioning, waxing you'll actually look forward to, and a messaging architecture that gave HoneyGirl a voice no competitor can claim. I set the creative direction, art directed the logo design, and built out a warm, aloha-inspired identity and brand guidelines. Then I redesigned and rewrote the website so it led with personality instead of policy, which made booking simple for first-time visitors. Today, the brand finally matches the experience clients have loved for years.
